THE COMMISSION PROCESS

The process of working with an individual to create a one of a kind piece is a very rewarding experience as an artist and it’s one that I truly enjoy. Each custom commission painting I create is unique and individual to each collector. There are a few decisions to make prior to beginning the process. I am happy to talk through all the options with you in order to help guide you through the process. This helps me make sure that you are getting the painting you want. Please consider the following options prior to filling out the form at the bottom of the page. I’ll contact you directly upon completion of the form with any follow-up questions I have, in addition to providing a commission agreement form.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

INSPIRATION:

If you know where the painting is going, it is helpful for me to see your space, either through photos or in person (if local), to get a feel for the surrounding atmosphere (wall color, fabric swatches, light, overall mood, etc.)

Any information you can provide that will help me understand what you envision for the piece, or what drew you to my particular style - what particular paintings of mine you favor, color palettes, etc, is appreciated. The more insight, the better!

Colors:

If you have any ideas for the colors or mood that you would like the piece to have, any images or swatches you can provide are very helpful. Once we have narrowed down the color palette, I’ll do some color swatches on watercolor paper, so that you can see what those colors will look like on watercolor paper once they are dry.

size:

Watercolor paper only comes in certain sizes, understanding what size painting you envision helps us work together to figure out how best to achieve that size.

MOUNTING:

There are couple of ways to finish a watercolor painting. I can mount them to a wood panel and place an archival varnish and wax finish on them. This way they can be displayed without glass but are also water resistant. This type of mounting can also be finished with a floater frame. If desired, the frame can be added into the final cost of the commission. Depending on the frame, I can complete the framing or we can work with a local wood maker I know to get a custom frame made.

The piece can also be mounted traditionally with mat board and glass. I can work with a frame shop to get this completed for you, or I can deliver the painting on paper to you and then you can have the painting framed as you wish. I’m here to help all along the way in whatever capacity you need me.

Pricing:

Once we determine the size, mounting and framing; I’ll provide a final price for the piece. Commissions do run about 15% more than ready-to-ship paintings.  This is to account for the time spent putting together a cohesive piece that meets all of your wishes.  I ask for a 50% deposit to begin, with the remaining balance due once your painting is complete, including shipping. Once the final invoice is paid the commissioned piece will be shipped.

From the time the commissioning agreement is signed, it can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months, depending on the size, complexity and mounting of the painting. It’s also important to allow time for shipping in the overall timeline. I can provide progress pictures for those who don't want to be surprised!
